Introduction

Hi all, this is 4th blog post we would like to share regarding the process of redefining the user interface for the eZ Publish Platform.

On this one, we will keep looking at a pure "wcm" feature of eZ Publish: the front page editing capability. This was already slightly touched by the previous story. Now we will look at this in more details, looking at how it can be used to manage complex front pages.

Very nice. I'm assuming the block controls (drag handle, edit delete) appear on mouseover?

One of the problems that should be addressed is giving some users guidance on what can be scheduled and how. Right now the concept of scheduling updates within blocks on an ezflow page is separate from all other scheduled updates. In your example here, how can we clearly communicate that the content queue changes are scheduled, but the adjustments to the page layout happen immediately? Users often want to be able to schedule not just featured items, but other changes as well. I think I had heard some discussion of a 'campaign' type update feature for scheduling content edits? It would be ideal if timeline preview could work on any page, instead of just in ezflow.

This looks great, especially for online magazines etc.

For newspapers, I would add two things though:

1) Show online statistics pr block. In this way you can easily optimize the page according to traffic. I would prefer a generic component and then handlers for specific statistics providers. As a default I would provide eZ's own and Google Analytics.

2) Add ability to edit fonts, text, images etc directly in the page. Combined with live statistics, you can then fine tune your page to give the very best results.

+1 on Felix's point about editing text in an ezpage. A lot of times you want to have a block that's just freeform. It would be fantastic to be able to edit it directly instead of needing to create another object separately to embed.

Indeed yes!

Agreed, from various talks we have identified the following topic as still to be solved:

  • Page composition management for all pages or not?
  • Confusion due to a dual concept of publishing (with must be adressed by better tackling cross-channel publishing, a front page being just another channel)
  • Preview of page vs content

And yes, there is a "Content Campaign" feature cooking that we hope to share soon...

We will try to rework on this! Thanks

This is coming, actually just we had a workshop to try to craft that. We want to provide not only statistics but alerts and recommendations. We will have this deeply tight to our tracking data though, so not planning on developing the GA based one ourselves, but the framework should allow a partner to do so.

This is to be discussed a bit further, it is a common request but it can break the separation between form and content except if really well done based on styles and tags. But I totally understand the need, and take the input!

roger that!

May be this could just be a specific block with independent teaser instead of teaser coming from the content. A classic discussion for many of us happy.gif Emoticon

I think this should be tackled when we deal with the definition of the default block. I could foresee initializing a teaser block with a content, but decoupling it from it, giving the editor more freedom (such as for example using the image editor on the block and only on the block)

As Joe mentioned, this seems to be mouse based (mouseover) or have there been focus on making sure this will work on touch devices as well? (given how common a touch device seems to be in the future)
