Introduction

Yesterday I had a great chat with Roland Benedetti, eZ Systems CPMO and André Rømcke, eZ Systems lead engineer, about  the latest eZ Publish version 5.4 and what is coming next. We had no network issues this time, but some problems with focus at the beginning. It was Angry Che's fault ;)

Hello,

Will pull requests still continue to be merged into legacy? If not when do they expect to stop?

Cheers,
Heath

The answer is Yes and No.
Yes, we for sure will still take care of PR when they are related to maintenance (bug fixes, small enhancements), as 5.4 as still a long way to go.
When it comes to new features, from eZ’s perspective we don't really see the point of adding them to legacy, we think it would be much better for all to think about contributing to the future eZ Platform.
Of course, we are not yet here, but it is where we go.
This means that we will surely not deal in the same way with those PR that relates to new functionality that would not be released in a new eZ Publish project.
However, that being said we might rely on the community to maintain the legacy eZ Publish community project with us. We would welcome  the contribution of community members teaming up with us, if they want to do more than what we can realistically do for Legacy. This is typically what we want to discuss in the community board. We will most probably open the community board to new members soon. I previously had also a call to participant for it, I’d invite you to apply for a seat in the board if you’re willing to participate.

The details on how we will proceed has yet to be defined, we will let the community know soon, stay tuned.

Do we have a complete list of features that won't be ported to 6.0 or couldn't be ready for that time?

Talking about it with Edi, Marco, Xavi and Antonio Péric in Madrid last weekend, we doubt if we will can completely plug-off from those projects we have now with ez5.

At the end, one of the things with legacy code is that even not the best code in the world it still does its job with some features like workflows, rss imports  and also some features we have in the legacy admin like, well, clearing caches happy.gif Emoticon

I can think we probably won't have time to port all that thing to 6.0 so maybe it should be good to know what will be and what won't be there at first and for two mainly reasons

  1. To decide if we should upgrade or keep our process with 5.4
  2. As a community member, to work in features that are not in the eZ Core Dev Team and that are part of our projects. i have something similar with shop module for my project, and maybe i can do the same for others...

Thank you!.

Hi Carlos,

We have a macro list at eZ, but we will definitely plan on sharing more information on this. I'll make sure of that.

I don't think you will. Again, 5.4 is here for a long time. And dot releases (5.4.1, 5.4.2 ....) will bring a lot of value. So we don't expect with the first release of eZ Platform and eZ Studio to cover the whole scope of eZ Publish. It is absolutely fine, from my point of view, if we still have projects using legacy and 5.x for a little while.

At the end, one of the things with legacy code is that even not the best code in the world it still does its job with some features like workflows, rss imports  and also some features we have in the legacy admin like, well, clearing caches .

Totally agree happy.gif Emoticon

For the first reason, I think most likely you should have both. From an Ops side, eZ Platform should be fairly similar to 5.4, just simpler as there is no legacy, but the Symfony and new kernel side will be the very same system, no major changes.

For the second, surely there will be a transition period especially for the one having a lot of custom made extensions, and the better we can inform them of our plan, the better we will all do. We also really hope we can increase the amount of contributions and better work with the community compared to during the 5.x years. We actually made a lot of progress and it is just about gearing up happy.gif Emoticon I believe a very important part that we are touching now is to reorganize a bit the way we work with the community and the way we will develop eZ Platform and maintain 5.x together with it. So, here as well, I hope we can soon open the community board and I would really invite you to participate as well.

Thank you for the continuous good feedback!
