The future eZ economy

The future eZ economy

The new eZ Studio promo video is well presented and shows what a great job the team have done in putting together a very compelling end-user offering.  Overall I feel the eZ team have done amazingly well in responding to the significant challenges faced in recent years. Moving to Symfony, creating the lean and polished eZ Platform and most importantly working very hard to make migration as smooth as possible has birthed renewed vigor and re-positioned eZ to once again be a serious contender in the market. I'm optimistic that is the right path in gaining traction toward steady growth.

So, what does this mean for us small but no less committed members of the 'Ecosystem', specifically for us "eZ Community Company" members.  Many of operate in the mass market sector, competing for client dollars against WordPress developers. Client may only get charged 1 or 2 thousand euro for small projects for example, but its a big market place.

eZ Community Company members like myself can easily "fall between the cracks". Too small to pay and keep Partner status but very active in the eZ world. As there is no direct communication channels for us, I'll ask here.

Where will eZ Studio be positioned, will an eZ Community Company be able afford to include it lower end sites that compete in the WordPress price range for example?

Look forward to the reply, and again fantastic work eZ team.

This is a very interesting topic, Brendan. I wonder exactly the same. Actually eZ Studio looks really really promising, but difficult to find customers willing to pay for it. Specially here in Spain.

Hi Brendan,

First to make clear one important thing. eZ Studio is the new Enterprise product which is based on eZ Platform UI. If you look at the video you will see 3 main tabs: Content, Page and Optimize. First is the basic eZ Platform UI functions which is not commercial and everyone can use. The other 2 are advanced features part of the eZ Studio. Guys from eZ Systems will probably explain this a bit better

In my opinion the separation is more clear than before. It will no longer be just about maintenance, support and upgrades, but also about features for clients editors, marketers, etc. The idea is to make money from people that make money via their sites.

But there will be a lot  without the eZ Studio part for smaller projects, I would not worry about that happy.gif Emoticon

It is now also for all community members to contribute so that features grow, I am just thinking about such blog post when the eZ Platform hits stable.

Much the same everywhere I expect Carlos. Presumably the lower the price, the higher the uptake within natural limitations. I've had a number of clients raise "how easy" WP is comparably to eZ, so I think some clients will be happy to pay if the costs are reasonable.

Hi Ivo, I know eZ Studio was not free, I didn't realise that it won't be available on the Community Edition though. If so that would be a significant reduction of market opportunity I would think.

For smaller projects / clients which I'm mainly addressing here there was never any confusion, the Enterprise products where simply out of reach financially, so they targeted a different market sector.

The idea is to make money from people that make money via their sites.

What was the idea before?

Is the eztw extension getting upgraded to support eZ Platform?

Thanks

There is no community edition and enterprise edition any more (kind of vertical separation line). There is ezplatform and ezstudio (horizontal separation line ). If you have ezplatform in place, ezstudion is just an addon.

Regarding making money, maybe I was not clear enough. Previously the enterprise subscription was about risk control. If you would like to be sure that everything works nice and smooth and have vendor support you pay. Type of site was not really in question and there was no addon features (except ezmarket features which were treated separately anyway).

With eZ Studio there is all that + features that will be useful for clients who are engaged on their site and getting value (hence making money) out of it. For example on a brand site editor will be able to quickly assemble a landing page for a campaign.

Hope this is more understandable happy.gif Emoticon

AFAIK ezwt (ezwebsite toolbar) is gone, new ui is replacing it too

Thanks for clarifying Ivo, this was my understanding of things also.

Without any official eZ response we are still in the dark and my initial question remains unanswered. It's clear the eZ technical team have delivered the goods, lets just all pray that the eZ management team don't drop the ball now.

IMHO the current eZ Market model of secret pricing is an anchor to progress and good for nothing other than lead channeling for eZ Systems. When buying a car would you use the dealer that advertisers the price clearly or the one that hides it and says call us?

Anyway I was trying to avoid any negative vibes here. eZ Platform / Studio are amazing, but as the saying goes, "insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results". Its up to management now, the programmers have delivered, now its managements turn.

I wait to hear with hope.

I don't think the engineering work is over, huge amount of work still needed.

Regarding pricing, I agree it could be more transparent, but this info is available for business partners as they help sell this.

Hi Brendan,
there is almost no need for official responses from eZ when Ivo more or less give you the answers blunk.gif Emoticon

As he says, Platform and Studio besides marking a big step forward on the technology stack and usability, a direction we set 3 years ago an will continue to execute on for several years to come. It is also a change in our business model from separating between stability and bleeding edge, to remove some of that difference in exchange for a open platform, with instead commercial tools on top for editorial teams and organizations.

Pricing for eZ Enterprise (containing eZ Studio, an LTS version of eZ Platform under a business license, support, maintenance, and option for additional services) is for the time being more or less the same as the pricing was for eZ Publish Enterprise in the past. But as I don't work on that it's better if you contact sales or partners if you'd like to know more.
Best,
André
