Hi all ,

WordPress and Zend-Framework are my favorite tools  but always like to try new development tools . Until a couple days ago I didn't even know ezPublish .I'm totally new to this CMS framework ,  so apologies for my questions .

1) Could you suggest links for tutorials / books ( amazon has no book-titles ) .

2)Has this framework any relation with : Apache Zeta components  or  components.ez.no

3) Do I have to pay for support ?

4) A community-repository for downloading plugins , themes ?

Best wishes for this new year ....

Hi Kostas,

Welcome to the community, I hope you enjoy eZ Publish. I know I love it and have been working with it for the last 9 years.

For your questions.

Books

There are several:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_...-keywords=ez+publish&x=0&y=0

I can recommend Learning eZ Publish 3 - it is for an older version but has good stuff in it (disclaimer : I wrote chapters in the book, so might be biased - best ask others happy.gif Emoticon

Framework

Yes Zeta components is an old eZ Publish project now in Apache incubator.

Support

Community is free, business support is paid for.

Downloads

There is a good resource here http://projects.ez.no/ but you can also pay for plugins for enterprise at ez.no.

Hope this helps

Tony

Hello Kostas,

To me too eZ Publish was new a few days ago. Even if I am no expert in webdev I got to understand how it works quite easily.

Concerning help, this forum has been providing invaluable help. I suggest you start having a look at what is going on on Twitter with #ezpublish. You might have ideas, help and so on.

Edit : as I come from WordPress as well I have to note that there are much less themes than on WP. to be true, I haven't found one. Have a look at what Arnaud wrote today on the very matter.

Have fun !

Hello kostas,

Welcome to the eZ Community!

1) You may also enjoy searching and reading ezpedia.org a wiki dedicated to sharing written eZ Publish tutorials, help and advice. http://ezpedia.org

2 ) eZ Publish makes use of Apache Zeta Components internally within eZ Publish itself. In fact a eZ Publish comes with Apache Zeta Components built in by default. The Apache Zeta Components project while used in eZ Publish is quite separate project / product with it's own unique future.

Many eZ Publish developers and users are watching the progress of the Apache Zeta Components project with baited interest blunk.gif Emoticon

3) The software is free, the knowledge of how to use it effectively however will cost you one of the two items:

  1. time (to learn on your own)
  2. or money (for training or development support from another developer of vendor already trained in eZ Publish)

You are not required to pay for support if you do not wish to do so. Your freedoms abound in the eZ Community!

4) A community-repository for downloading plugins , themes ?

You will really want to review the software available on http://projects.ez.no

There is a lot of interesting eZ Publish extension code / solutions is available there, and a lot of it works very well by default (depending on the version of eZ Publish is used), older extension may not work 100% by default but can usually be restored to working functionality rather simply, we do this all the time. Customer gives us a need, we find an existing solution that will meet the need, customize as desired and the results provide exactly what the customer desires ...

I hope this helps ...

Please feel free to continue to ask more questions as you think of them here in the forums, we are happy to help you reach your goals quickly and effectively.

PS. I personally loved the eZ publish 3 book Tony contributed to, I think it still holds value today (from a certain perspective that remains valid today). Also I have enjoyed the other books about eZ Publish from packt publishing and eZ systems.

Sadly it does not seem that eZ Systems is still publishing or even distributing their books publicly any longer. I would contact eZ Systems to see if they can help you get copies of the helpful books they published in the past (I think they made 2 or 3 so worth asking ...) http://share.ez.no/blogs/ez/printing-books-or-going-further

Update: I found a blog that linked to free copies of at least two books from eZ Systems. I recommend trying to download and reading them several times with practice sessions.

http://share.ez.no/blogs/thiago-campos-viana/three-ebooks-you-can-download-for-free-about-ez-publish

Second update: Seems they removed the links published previously (must have been a time sensative give away ... or something). A friend in irc (thanks kwadronaut) shares with secret hidden page on ez.no which still allows you to download the free pdf book (I confirmed this myself!). Here is the link

http://ez.no/fr/node_574/Advanced-PDF-Book

Third update: Ahh and it took a few minutes longer to find but we found the other free book here is the secret hidden page where you can still download the free pdf book, https://ez.no/fr/node_574/Content-Management-Basics

Fourth update: A little later this evening we found another free pdf book download form, (I really like this one myself, strongly recommended) here is the secret hidden page where you can still download the free pdf book, http://ez.no/fr/node_574/eZ-Publish-Basics

Warning: My friends tell me that there's a bug in the above ez.no pdf book download forms (free download but requires you fill out the form with fake information). The downloads work but there is one bug, "if you open the second link, then go to the first book again and fill it out you actually download the second book". So be careful to avoid this bug when downloading the free pdf books.

We also found direct links to the files, so you don't need to even use the forms. We also took a moment to extend the ezpedia article and add the both direct links and form survey download links!

http://ezpedia.org/ez/books#ezsystems-publishing

Get these free pdf books today! They will prolly be removed from the internet in the future once and for all!

I strongly recommend that any users reading this post who have not yet downloaded the free pdf books do so right away, do it now, do it today because these free pdf books will prolly be removed from the internet entirely in the future (eZ systems does things like this regularly each year). They are protected by copyright so they can not be publicly redistributed under their current terms so we can not really setup legitimate / legal mirrors of this content.

Get your copy today or risk it not being available for download in the future!

In closing I would add that I also like the more recent packt books regarding eZ Publish 4. I own at least three of them and will prolly buy more titles in the future.

Cheers,

Heath

This one is also my favorite because it gives good technical basis for advanced customization (template operators, modules, workflows, etc...). During trainings, I always advise attendees to buy this one so that's a good choice..

Tony, you also owe me another beer !

Done - Next time we meet.

I am humbled that people still find the book useful. I think it shows the stability of knowledge in the eZ Publish environment that you can spend the time to learn something and it is still useful years later.

Hello bisk,

It's good to hear from you back in the forums happy.gif Emoticon

Happy to help, your very welcome!

I'm sure you'll pick up eZ Publish quickly once you get started!

It's like riding a bike happy.gif Emoticon You just get started and it starts to come together.

I think you'll really like eZ Publish 4 as it is basically a PHP5+ compatible version of the previous eZ Publish 3 and with a lot more improvements.

Many new features have been added and refined. Basically at this point quite large amounts of code have been very much improved, yet the system remains in most respects the same system. You no longer need to use includes or requires as eZ Publish 4 loads all classes on your behalf within the system. Many core eZ Publish kernel libraries have been replaced by Apache Zeta Components, still more are expected to replace others.

Extensions in early editions of eZ Publish 3 were limited in what functionality was supported within extensions like say designs while eZ Publish 4 provides an extensive and flexible extension functionality to build up your extension to provide most of all the possible features of your site you could imagine.

Experience with eZ Publish 3 directly correlates to experience with eZ Publish 4.

There is a lot more but I will leave some of that to you and your own studies. Also I suggest reading the recent git repository commit log and pull request for ezpublish on github.com as you have free time to see what improvements are being made. I think they are just started adding / refining PHP5.4 support offhand. Remember to use the latest stable community build when building new websites with eZ Publish.

Feel free to ask questions here in the forums whenever you need some advise or help solving a problem as always.

Best wishes

Cheers,

Heath
