Hi HR,
This is not possible with the standard setup; however, you can override the datatype's edit template ( /design/standard/templates/content/datatype/edit/ezobjectrelationlist.tpl )to impose limits on an editor.
As objects can have multiple relations of several types ( Common, Embedded, Attribute, Reverse-related ), there are no limits at the object level.
