Hi,
if you're using the default country datatype, the country list will be in English. Here is below the link to download the country.ini.append.php file with the French translation of the country names:
To apply this translation, override the default "country.ini" file by adding the downloaded "country.ini.append.php" file in the "settings/override/" folder (to override it globally) or in your siteaccess settings folder (e.g. "settings/siteaccess/site_fr/"

Would you consider writing a share.ez.no blog post or article on this topic?
Some times these make example solutions more simply understood and stand out on share.ez.no readers where forum posts on their own can often become lost in a sea of other posts.
Alternatively http://ezpedia.org/solution makes it fairly simple to also document exactly these kinds of solutions.
Doing these extra steps while increasing the distribution of the knowledge also increases the search engines ability to find content on topic matches.
