Last month, I asked about how MariaDB database is used in the community, to get a better clue on how it could potentially be an important database to use and support officially in our product development and maintenance.

We had a good turnout of answer for a first attempt, enough to get some sense from it, thanks to all participating!
(The poll is still open and I could totally update the results by the way, so if you have not, you can still go and express your opinion here)

The results are very clear:

  • MySQL is still, by far, the main database system used on eZ Publish.
  • While very few people really use MariaDB yet, a lot of people think that it is the future of MySQL, but may be not in the short term.
  • People are thus interested and curious and would welcome support, but are not dying for it.

At eZ, we will chew on this, we will also watch closely how the main linux distributions keep moving. I would not foresee us switching to MariaDB first in the very short term, but clearly, it seems like a very possible story in the mid-term. Stay tuned and see the result of the poll, to date, below!

And by the way, if you missed it, we have another poll running, talking about Web Analytics! Check it out and tell us what you think!
