Using eZcomments with recaptcha and getting spam

Tuesday 30 October 2012 4:32:31 pm - 2 replies

Hi folks,

We are using the ezcomments-extension with recaptcha. Nethertheless we have spam-comments on our blog. We tried to trick the recaptcha ourselves but we couldnt! Do you have any solutions for this problem. We had to make comments available for registered users only because of that.

Best regards,

Was it a lot of spam (or just a little)?  It's possible that some human (or group) was typing the captcha response in.  If that's the case and you allow anonymous registration without approval, then they may just start registering bogus users and you'll be back to square one.

If you google "recaptcha cracked" or something like that, nothing current is out there (and if recaptcha were cracked there would be a lot of people talking about it).

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the way the ez recaptcha is implemented either, do you have any extra javascript that maybe is inadvertently letting spammers through?

Reviving this old post, I can confirm that recaptcha is all but useless currently.  Spammers have pools of typists in 3rd world countries manually entering now days.  Other approaches are needed.
