5.x & Admin Designs

I’ve hit an interesting point in my upgrade (from 4.6) to 5.1, and I’m not sure what action to take.

The editor/admin site designs were customised heavily when the site was built. From what I can tell, most of the customisation involved removing buttons/objects from view, which our content producers don’t need to see, as well as renaming certain items for familiarity's sake. There were also some new features added which are only relevant to this site.

The problem I have is that all of the overridden files were copied from the old admin/admin2 theme folders. So if I keep them as they are I'm are not benefiting from any of the changes introduced from 4.6 to 5.1. (We're talking about changes to main template files like content/edit.tpl and node/view/full.tpl, as well as many smaller files). There may also be bugs fixes and security fixes applied to these templates between 4.6 and 5.1 which I won't have.

Ideally I would like to delete all the overridden files and start again, using the new 5.1 templates. However this is  a lot of work, and I’m not sure if it is worth the effort.

What would you do in this situation?

What risks does keeping the "old" files pose for future upgrades - 5.2 and beyond?

What are the future plans for the back end of ezpublish in twig/symfony? I don’t want to spend time rebuilding the .tpl files now, if they will need to be rebuilt again as .twig files later down the line.

Thanks for your time.

A new interface is in the works, but it is going to be quite different from admin/admin2 - probably splitting away editing and system-administration functionality. You can see how the ideas are developing by following Roland's blog on this very forum.

Security fixes in templates are generally rare, and any bugfixes introduced from 4.6 to 5.1 are probably not critical for your editors, otherwise they would have already complained blunk.gif Emoticon

This is not to say that I advocate withholding any upgrade process for existing customized templates, but I have not better solution to offer than  doing a 3-way merge: check the diffs between eZ templates versions 4.6 and 5.1 and, if any, merge them to your customized versions...

Tony mentioned elsewhere that the changes are starting to be introduced from 5.2, so it makes sense to leave the templates as they are for now.

Found his blog: http://share.ez.no/blogs/ez-publish-next-ui/redefining-ez-publish-user-interface-story-1/(language)/eng-GB

Really excited about the changes!

Now I just need to persuade the editors to embrace the change...

Thanks for your help!
