Totally confused and stuck

Totally confused and stuck

Friday 25 July 2003 11:53:53 pm - 6 replies

Hey,
I'm really excited that I got eZpublish 3 working on my site but I'm totally stuck!! I feel really bad for asking but I've looked at the SDK and all the documentation etc. and I'm totally baffled!

I installed the demo site and it works but I don't seem to get how the stuff in the admin corresponds to the actual site - for example:
* Why does the 'News' page show up automatically in the site as the first page?

* How is the News page set to show the summaries of the news articles?

* Where are the templates for each section set? For example, how would I change the template of the News page?

I'm seriously totally confused sad.gif Emoticon I just want to know the 'basics' so I can get started. Another thing... in the first page of the admin where the folders are listed, what do they represent? Help!!!

Thanks to anyone that can help!!!

Dave

* Why does the 'News' page show up automatically in the site as the first page?
-----------------------------------------
This you can configure in settings/site.ini

Under [SiteSettings] you find:
# Which page to show when the root index (/) is accessed
IndexPage=/content/view/sitemap/2/

change it to your destination.

* How is the News page set to show the summaries of the news articles?
---------------------------------------
I assume you mean teh summary on frontpage which you click on "read more.." to .... yeah, read morehappy.gif Emoticon

If you go to the admin site you can see that each news is an article. Under settings in admin you can see the classes. Find article in classes, and what ID it has. In the demo, article has ID 2.

Under design/demo/override/templates/node/view/ you can find the templates for each class.

line_class_2.tpl is the file you are looking for. line_class is in other words the link for full page. The full page is full_class_2.tpl. line_class links to full class. The number _2 points to the class, in this case articles.

Hope this is understandable, if not I will try and give you more step by step.

* Where are the templates for each section set? For example, how would I change the template of the News page?
---------------------------------
in design/demo/override/templates/

pagelayout_section_(number).tpl

(number) is the section number wich you find in admin.

Another thing... in the first page of the admin where the folders are listed, what do they represent? Help!!!
------------------------------------
You see a tree view of your website. Try to imagine it like your windows explorer. Go to "Frontpage" (top left), and you can see the folders in "root".

Hey! Thanks for the reply!!!
I'm still really confused though lol.

How about this... if I wanted to start a site from scratch... with a few different sections where each one had a different 'title image' with a different colour background, how would I do it? It would have a text link to each different section at the top.

Then how do I put my content in it? (one section I want to be a forum, the other a product centre etc).

Thanks again!

You should read the SDK, the tutorials are what you need to read first!

I'm sorry but I just cannot figure it out - I've just been through the tutorial and manual but I still am totally lost. I made a folder in 'Root Folder' called 'Sports' and put an article in there, but when I go to index.php, the admin page just loads up, not the sport section sad.gif Emoticon

Hi,
I just installed the demo site again and changed the 'indexpage' in site.ini to this...

# Which page to show when the root index (/) is accessed
IndexPage=/content/view/sitemap/4/

But it still shows the news pages when you open index.php!

Please help... I'm really close to leaving eZpublish (even though it will do exactly what I need) because it's not that easy.

Hi Dave,

You should try to empty your cache.
Goto your ezpublish root folder in shell and type "./bin/shell/clearcache.sh --clear-all"... That should do the trick. And if you don't have shell access, you can also clear your cache from the admin site. It was somewhere in "setup"-tab if I remember right...

Hope this helps,
Jerry
