Content Class Translations -- what are they supposed to do?

I'm having trouble grokking Content Class translations in eZ 4.x .  Say that I have an article class.  If I create a content class translation for it, I want English object name pattern to be "Edition <year>", and French object names to be "Edition de <year>", but when I edit one content class, both object name patterns are changed.  For another example, I want to translate select box options and I change them in French, they are changed on the English version of the class, too.
Am I missing something?  The translations seem to do nothing.

Maybe the class is in eng-gb and your site is in eng-us using French as second language.

I've learned the answer from the helpful chaps in IRC.  It looks like many things are not translated in the content class translations.  Only Content class attribute names and descriptions are translated, but the things I need (datatype options, content object name patterns, etc) are not ever translated.  That feature has never been implemented.
